Along the Banks of the Volga River

Along the Banks of the Volga River

Masterpieces of the Russian photography from the second half of the 19th century
in the collection of the National Library of Russia in Saint Petersburg.

Vishnyakov's collection contrasts with large format photographs created by one of the most prominent Russian artists Maxim Dmitriyev during his voyages on a special steamship from the late 1880s to the early 1890s. The photographs became known as The Volga Collection and made their author famous. Like his mentors, M. Nastyukov and A. Karelin, Maxim Dmitriyev took photographs of his native Volga, its nature, its towns, villages and monasteries. He successfully melted and enriched the creative experience of his famous preceptors.
