130 years of storing the landmark in the National Library of Russia
The Petersburg Leaf from the twelfth century Miroslav Gospel — a landmark of a Slavonic manuscript book, with initials having no equal in their rich decoration, — entered the Imperial Public Library (the former name of our library) along with a large collection gathered by Bishop Porphyrius Uspensky. In 1885, the official information about this valuable acquisition became public: the Report of the Imperial Public Library for 1883 contained a description of the leaf.
Since then, the Petersburg Leaf of Miroslav's Gospel has been carefully housed as an integral part of Bishop Porphyrius' collection in the Manuscripts Department at the first public library in Russia.
