Along the Banks of the Volga River
Masterpieces of the Russian photography from the second half of the 19th century
in the collection of the National Library of Russia in Saint Petersburg.
Maxim Dmitriyev's panoramic images are a vivid example of fine art photography; they are remarkable for their truly epic scale, graphic power, compositional and technical mastery. They are amazing in terms of graphic representation of light and air. The photographs almost lack retouching, which proves how outstandingly skillful their creator was. Dmitriyev was a true chronicler of the Volga region. His pictures were reproduced in numerous albums and printed on postcards, great numbers of which were sold all over Russia. The artist was able to work in all the phographic genres, including chronicle and documentary. His photos are both ethnogragraphically precise and absolutely trustworthy in respect of the events that they depict.
